Jaded Romance

I often feel so empty inside,
just like the apartment I live in,
beige walls, brown curtains, glass,
pretty to look at, but devoid of soul,
and when things get unbearable and even
drinking doesn’t solve a thing,
I create these realities in my mind,
worlds that are shaped by some utopic vision
of you and I,
worlds that’ll endure any trial
because ‘love never gives up’ or clichés like that,
but we know the truth, don’t we?
It’s just a proverb turned inside out:
this too shall never pass
while a paperweight of agony traps us
and we’re foolishly clinging to each other’s
defeated sense of self,
hoping for a morale boost
and calling it everything fancy like a ‘jaded romance’
and a ‘broken togetherness’ when it’s really
nothing except the unbearable disgust that
comes with looking in the mirror with self-loathing
as added fuel.

  1. Beautifully poignant words, Nitin. I love your poem. This part especially speaks to me:

“I create these realities in my mind,
worlds that are shaped by some utopic vision
    of you and I”

  2. Yes, I really do. You are a very talented writer, Nitin. Your poems are emotionally vibrant like cascades of torrential words coming from the heart. Marta.
